OutBack Critters

Welcome!

I use to breed cockatiels and also dabbled in breeding different types of finches. Those day's are long gone, now I just concentrate on enjoying our two parrots...

Our current flock consists of our Umbrella Cockatoo - Francious and our African Timneh Grey - Echo

Umbrella Cockatoo - "Francious"

I bought Francious - "Franny" in 1988, from a very well known pet store chain. He was estimated at about five at the time. He was in such a small cage, he couldnt even spread his wings out... Franny is pushing thirty now, if my math is correct and usually it is not! Any way, Francious was a wild import, that is what they told me any way. He emediatly turned out to be the sweetest, tamest, big birdy ever. I love my Franny.

After pushing almost thirty years, I gave my Francious to a wonderful couple. I work with her at the nursing home and she and her husband are great folks. I still cant believe I gave my Franny away after all these years. But I did it for my Mike...Francious has a great new home now and is settling nicely, they love him and he gets more attention then he had been getting here at home. I am so happy for my Franny and for Janette and Long Tall Bob. If it turns out to not work out for them some day - they know that he comes back to me. And that makes feel at ease...

African Timneh Grey "Echo"

Echo was originally a rescue, we have had him now for about four years, I think. He was terrified of men at first, squacking and freaking out...He now let's my husband pet his beak and head - with his cage door opened mind you - which is a HUGE achievement. I have been able to pet Echo's beak, head, feet etc. all along - but through the cage bars only. No comparison to my hubby petting him with no cage barriers - ESPECIALLY when Echo was apparently abused by a man. To this day he is still afraid of men - with the exception of my husband.

Echo say's ton's of things, close to seventy phrases, I would bet. Some of them are...
GIT GIT!! ( When the dogs are buy his cage looking for food, he will look right down at them and say this. ) COME HEEERR!! ( He wants us to come by him. ) Nummy nummy's! Oooh - yummy nummy! Ummm! ( He say's this when he knows we are bringing him a really yummy treat from the microwave...it is to the point where Franny ( who doesnt talk ) will start squacking up a storm ( in  impatience ) when he hears the microwave! Haayyy... ( Mimicking us. ) Huhh? What? Hah? ( Mickiming us and of course always seems to be at the right time! ) Momma ( I have only heared him say this once, I have been trying to get him to say it for years - but these intelengent birds have a mind of their own and say what THEY want to say! ) He also mimicks babie birds chirping, I raised finches the first couple of years that I had Echo. I was constantly hearing this babie chirping noise and would go to stand on a chair and look up in to the nest...Years later I realised it was Echo making this noise, his cage was right next to the finches when I was raising them. I must have been some sort of entertainment for him!!

Echo has really been talking up a storm since my Franny is gone...Echo always talked it up a lot, but now he is even more vocal, if that is even possible. Which apparently it is. After years of being in an avery situation...Echo is now the only birdy boy in our home. He seems very happy with the arrangement. I am glad.
